Types of Cancer Treatments

Getting a diagnosis of cancer can be scary and it can be life changing. However, what you have to understand is that it’s not the end. You can fight the diseases. There are a lot of treatment options available to you. In fact, this will be one of the first things your doctor will discuss. Listen and ask as many questions as you need to find out how you can deal with your cancer.

These are the most common cancer treatments available to patients:

-Chemotherapy
-Radiation
-Surgery

Chemotherapy involves the introduction of chemicals that have been designed to target fast growing cells in your body. Since cancer cells are fast growing, they will be targeted by chemotherapy. This mode of action is also what causes hair loss in chemotherapy because hair is fast growing.

Radiation is a treatment that targets cancer cells by the application of radiation heat. Unlike chemotherapy, radiation will be able to target specific areas in your body. This is used to treat cancers that can be found on a specific area of the body.

Surgery involves the removal of cancerous tissues in the body. Often, it also removes the removal of the immediate area surrounding the cancer in order to keep it from spreading. Cancers like breast cancer and colon cancers usually involve  the removal of the affected part of the body.

Some patients can receive double treatments. Surgery, for example, can be couple with rounds of radiation or chemotherapy. This is all done in an attempt to keep kill cancer cells.

When you are deciding on a treatment plan for your cancer, consider your options carefully. If you are a caregiver or a parent of a young child with cancer, it may be a good idea to ask your doctor about options that will be more child friendly.
