The competition is open to cancer non-profit associations; patient groups and advocacy organizations; cancer, research and medical centres; amateur and professional film-makers; and film school students.
Only films that meet the following conditions will be chosen for invitation in the official selection.
All films should be documentaries and categories within that include:
Film must have a direct link with cancer and address the patient experience in some way, which can also include perspectives of family, caregivers, research and cancer organizations.
Films will be judged based on their artistic merit, in line with the UICC and festival missions. Films will be reviewed and judged by a panel of film industry celebrities and cancer control experts.
Films can be presented in their original language but if not filmed in English, English subtitles and/or transcripts must be supplied in written form. All subtitling expenses for transcripts and translations are to be met by the film’s producer.
A paragraph summarizing the film in 200 words or less must also be submitted with the film entry.
Deadline for entries: 1 May 2008
During the entire duration of The Cancer Chronicles film festival (28-30 August 2008), none of the films invited should be shown outside the official theatre in a screening event format.
The judging panel reserves the right to decide whether a film is eligible for participation in the competition.
The organizers reserve the right not to award any overall or category winners (see below).
The organizers reserve the right to edit entries to be used as highlights or trailers during the awards ceremony and use for promotional activities before, during and after the festival.
Presentation format for the judging process is DVD or CD (these can not be returned). Format for screening during the festival will be agreed prior to the festival.
All necessary rights must be cleared before submission.
No entry fees are required.
The grand prize (overall winner)
Category winners will be based on the variety of films submitted but may include best feature and/or short, best reportage-style, and best PSA.
Grand prize winner will receive $10,000 prize money.
Additional monetary prizes will be given to category winners.
